چکیده

Several stellar systems (white dwarfs, red giants, horizontal branch stars and possibly the neutron star in the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A) show a mild preference for a non-standard cooling mechanism when compared with theoretical models. This exotic cooling could be provided by Weakly Interacting Slim Particles (WISPs), produced in the hot cores and abandoning the star unimpeded, contributing directly to the energy loss. Taken individually, these excesses do not show a strong statistical weight. However, if one mechanism could consistently explain several of them, the hint could be significant. We analyze the hints in terms of neutrino anomalous magnetic moments, minicharged particles, hidden photons and axion-like particles (ALPs). Among them, the ALP or a massless HP represent the best solution. Interestingly, the hinted ALP parameter space is accessible to the next generation proposed ALP searches, such as ALPS II and IAXO and the massless HP requires a multi TeV energy scale of new physics that might be accessible at the LHC. ar X iv :1 51 2. 08 10 8v 2 [ as tr oph .H E ] 3 0 M ay 2 01 6

Spitzer Far-infrared Detections of Cold Circumstellar Disks

Observations at 70 mm with the Spitzer Space Telescope have detected several stellar systems within 65 pc of the Sun. Of 18 presumably young systems detected in this study, as many as 15 have 70 mm emission in excess of that expected from their stellar photospheres. Five of the systems with excesses are members of the Tucanae association. The 70 mm excesses range from a factor of ∼2 to nearly 3...

Supranova Model for the Delayed Reddened Optical Excesses Detected in Several GRBs

Excess reddened optical emission has been measured in the power-law decay afterglow light curves of several GRBs some tens of days after the GRB events. This emission is claimed to be a signature of a supernova (SN) taking place at the same time as the GRB event, in support of the collapsar scenario. Observations of features in prompt and afterglow X-ray spectra of GRBs require high density, hi...

A Survey for Circumstellar Disks around Young Substellar Objects

We have completed the first systematic survey for disks around spectroscopically identified young brown dwarfs and very low mass stars. For a sample of 38 very cool objects in IC 348 and Taurus, we have obtained L-band (3.8 μm) imaging with sufficient sensitivity to detect objects with and without disks. The sample should be free of selection biases for our purposes. Our targets span spectral t...

Constraints on Cool Gas in Rich Clusters of Galaxies

Cool gas should be present in galaxy clusters due to stripping of galactic gas, infall onto the cluster, and from cooling flows. We searched for this gas through resonance absorption line observations from lowionization metal line gas toward six background quasars. Both cooling flow and non-cooling flow clusters were observed, with lines of sight from the inner to outer parts of the cluster (0....

Bounds on Very Weakly Interacting Sub - eV Par - ticles ( WISPs ) from Cosmology and Astrophysics

Many weakly interacting sub-electronVolt particles (WISPs) are easily accommodated in extensions of the standard model. Generally the strongest bounds on their existence come from stellar evolution and cosmology, where to the best of our knowledge observations seem to agree with the standard budget of particles. In this talk I review the most demanding constraints for axions and axion-like-part...
